Dr. Gregg Frey Orthodontics > About Orthodontics > Child Orthodontics

It is best for children to see an orthodontist by age 7 or earlier if a problem is noticed by parents, family dentist or child's physician. A timely orthodontic examination can determine if treatment is necessary and the best time to be treated. First permanent molars and incisors usually have come in at this age and we can evaluate crowding, crossbites and other problems. Dr. Frey offers this orthodontic evaluation at no cost.
If problems exist and treatment is necessary, it usually is a first phase type treatment between the ages of 6-10. Early interceptive or phase one treatment can:
- Guide facial growth
- Prevent crowding of permanent teeth
- Correct skeletal problems (crossbites, overbites, underbites)
- Control harmful oral habits
- Reduce the length of comprehensive treatment
This early interceptive care usually takes about 6-12 months and by addressing problems early can help prevent the need for permanent tooth extractions, surgery and more serious complications.
Instead of removing crowded permanent teeth, Dr. Frey prefers to make room for them. This ensures your child has a big, beautiful smile and a great, balanced, facial profile as an adult.
After any early interceptive care is completed, the teeth are in a "resting period" or maintenance phase. By observation visits approximately 2 times per year we can closely monitor growth and permanent tooth eruption. We will keep parents informed of future treatment recommendations if they are necessary.
Some children do not require early treatment but following an initial, complimentary exam, Dr. Frey will want to observe their growth and eruption of their permanent teeth. We are happy to offer these observation visits at no charge.
Between the ages of 10-12 most permanent teeth have come in. If at that time there is a need for an orthodontic correction, that treatment usually consists of straightening teeth with braces. This comprehensive treatment can require full braces for 14-24 months.
Each tooth has an exact location in the mouth where it is in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue and the other teeth. When this equilibrium is established all of the teeth function properly, stay healthy, look attractive and a great facial profile is achieved.
Dr. Frey's goal for every patient is a "Simply Spectacular Smile."
