Oral-B Power Toothbrush Buyer’s Guide

By Dr. Scott Frey

You may have noticed that there are more than a few kinds of electric toothbrushes on the market, and navigating all the features and models can be confusing.  I thought it might be helpful if we took some time to compare the features of current toothbrush models starting with all the Oral-B electric toothbrushes.

If you are considering getting an Oral-B rotating oscillating style toothbrush, here is the complete feature breakdown:

You’ll notice that the 3000, 4000, 5000 models all have the same brushing power and speed, but there are a few important points of contrast between the models that can help you decide which model is right for you.

Oral-B 3000 (retail $99.99)

  • 7 day Travel Time (the other models have 10 travel time without charge)

Oral-B 4000 (retail $124.99)

  • 10 day Travel Time
  • Massage Mode (not terribly important in my opinion)

Oral-B Triumph ToothbrushOral-B 5000 (retail $159.99)

  • 10 day travel time
  • Improved pressure feedback (the other two models will also tell you if you are brushing too hard)
  • Additional cleaning modes (not terribly important in my opinion)
  • SmartGuide to help you time your brushing

From my point of view, the 3000 has all the features you would want, but reduced battery life.  If the additional battery life is extremely important, get the 4000 model.  I have seen all sorts of different deals and discounts online, so it really depends on the price you are getting, but I have seen good prices on the Oral-B 4000 that are comparable to the 3000 so I think you can get your best deal with the 4000 model.

I also like the SmartGuide with the Oral-B 5000, but I am not sure it is worth the extra money.  That said, I think if you are especially prone to toothbrush abrasion/recession you can make a case to spring for the enhanced pressure feedback features in the 5000 model to make sure you don't brush too hard.

Once you have an electric tootbrush, it is important that you are using correctly.  Be sure to check out our guide to brushing with a powered toothbrush.
